Opening a shared link: the app first, the website as a fallback

What happens when you tap a County Cricket link on Android or an iPhone, and what to do if it opens in the browser instead of the app.

Every link County Cricket shares starts with https://countycricket.app. That one address is what lets your phone hand the link to the app when the app is installed, and show the website when it is not.

  • A match: countycricket.app/match/{match id}/{screen}. The screen is info, live, summary, scorecard, insights, commentary, or gallery, and it is the tab that opens.
  • A player: countycricket.app/player/{id}, from a profile QR. The id is random; it is not your phone number.
  • The app itself: countycricket.app/app, which sends an Android phone to Google Play.

A match link with no screen, or with one that does not exist, opens the match’s usual page: the scorecard once it is over, the live board before that.

With the app installed

Tapping the link in WhatsApp, Messages, or a browser opens the app straight on that tab. If you are signed out, the app takes you through sign-in and then to the match instead of dropping you on Home.

Without the app

The website opens the same screen. A strip at the top offers Open in the County Cricket app, which launches the app if it is installed and otherwise opens the Google Play page, and Get the app. iPhone users see the website, since the App Store release is not out yet.

If the app does not open

  • Update the app — links only open the app in versions that support them.
  • On Android, open Settings → Apps → County Cricket → Open by default and allow it to open supported links. The wording varies by phone.
  • Tap Open in the County Cricket app on the page.
  • Add ?web=1 to the end of any link to stay on the website on purpose.
